Having high levels of abnormal cholesterol can make a person at risk of heart disease. It will not be an instant thing; Heart disease can gradually develop as people age and as one continues to maintain very high cholesterol levels. If you plan to live well for many years, then lowering your cholesterol levels most quickly may be able to help you achieve your goals.

There are certain medications available on the market today that aim to lower cholesterol levels. They are grouped in the most distinct class of HMG-CoA Inhibitors or otherwise known as "statins". Drugs included in this group try to block the HMG-CoA enzyme, which serves as one of the necessary steps to convert fat into cholesterol. Statins are known as the most effective cholesterol-lowering agents to date and have been a great help for people who need a drastic reduction in their cholesterol levels.

There is also a cholesterol-lowering drug called bile acid sequence that works by binding itself to the bile produced by the human heart. Bile is a substance that helps the digestive system and in the absorption of fat in the intestine. Bile acid enzymes prevent cholesterol formation by preventing bile acids from digesting fat.

There are also vitamins that help lower cholesterol levels. The most prominent among them are Vitamin B3 or Niacin. Niacin is one of eight water-soluble B vitamins that help the body convert carbohydrates into glucose used in the body for energy. Vitamin B is also important to the breakdown of body fat and protein as well as in helping make the nervous system, skin, eyes, hair, mouth, and liver health. Niacin also helps the body get rid of toxic and harmful chemicals.

Niacin has also been found to increase the effects of other cholesterol-reducing drugs. But such effects are only possible if niacin is consumed in large doses. But people are also warned to be cautious in trying to lower their cholesterol levels by consuming large amounts of Niacin. A large amount of this B vitamin can cause skin rising due to dilation of blood vessels as well as other side effects such as itching, nausea, headache,  and also muscle cramps.

Vitamins and other substances that are also credited with helping the body lower its cholesterol levels are Lecithin and vitamin C and E. Lecithin works by allowing fat and cholesterol to spread from the body and helps prevent fat accumulation in the arteries. Vitamin C and E are also proven to help in the effort to help prevent heart disease by protecting LDL cholesterol from damage. Although LDL cholesterol is also known as "bad" cholesterol, most cardiologists believe that only damaged LDL contributes to an increased risk of heart disease.
