Burdock is a plant associated with the daisy family. It is also closely related to Echinacea, Dandelion, and Feverfew. Burdock is a herb but it is one that has been abandoned a lot when it gets attention. Back in ancient times the Greeks used roots, seeds, and green vegetables and used them for healing purposes. Throughout the Middle Ages Burdock is used for food and medicine.
Currently, Burdock is still used for such things as reducing liver problems and indigestion. It is also shown to be very effective for cleansing the skin for problems like acne and also for helping with digestive problems. To this day throughout Europe, stalks and vegetables are still eaten because they contain valuable nutrients and vitamins.
As more research is being conducted in Burdock, many new and exciting discoveries emerge. A relationship is being examined between Burdock and its anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties, and more importantly, it shows signs of possibly fighting tumors and can be a cancer battle agent as well. Research has shown that because many cancer-causing compounds exist in almost all foods that are then eaten and stored in human fat tissue that may greatly assist Burdock in the fight against cancer because of the role it can play in diluting this mutagen.
Burdock is also very helpful in strengthening the immune system when it has been weakened by environmental factors. When mixed with other ingredients such as Dandelion and Ginger it can be a very strong blood purifier. The unique fact about Burdock is that it has a very high amount of insulin that is a natural chemical in the body that mimics the action of insulin. Therefore, Burdock has successfully helped combat hypoglycemia and pre-diabetes conditions.
If you're looking for Burdock in the market, you'll probably find it called gobo, not that's what some call it. It is often combined with other vegetables or added to Tofu. Some boil Burdock while others stir or deep fry. Many say there may not be a good idea to look at Burdock before you eat it because you might change your mind to bite.
It looks thick, dark, and woody but it's the exact opposite when it comes to taste. Burdock is known as a health food because it has low-calorie content and high fiber intake. It is also loaded with potassium, iron, and calcium. People claim that Burdock does not like anything else. In other words, it has its own taste.
The best description anyone can agree on is the aroma of Burdock is a sweet but earthy texture, with a soft, sharp texture. This is often added to stews, soup, and stir-fry. In the form of food, Burdock is very nutritious and full of vitamins but in retrospect Burdock is also an effective herb to restore the balance of the body.
